What Boian Days Represents:
Celebrating our Romanian Heritage
The first settlers to Alberta from Boian, Bucovina came in early 1898. They settled in an area in Alberta that they named Boian after their home town in Bucovina.
By January 1901, approximately 100 Romanian families were settled in the Boian district. Smaller groups of Romanian settlers settled in rural Alberta districts such as Ispas, Shepenge, Midway, Malin, Hamlin, Desjarlais, Shalka, Borowich, Zhoda, Soda Lake and Smoky Lake.
Romanian Pioneer Museum
The CRSA operates this museum to showcase our early Pioneer History with many displays and artifacts donated by our local Romanian families. It is open Sundays 11am to 5pm May long weekend to September long weekend.
A Cultural Celebration: (3rd Sunday in July)
The Balada Romanian Folk Dance Ensemble comes out every year and preforms some traditional Romanian dances. They also bring the Lumina dance group out to showcase their talents and carry on the Romanian dance traditions.
The CRSA also features traditional Romanian performers, cultural exhibits, and activities for all ages.
Traditional Romanian Cuisine: (3rd Sunday in July)
Romanian food—sarmale and mititei is prepared by the CRSA and the Edmonton Romanian Orthodox Church St. Constantin and Elena Ladies Club. It is served by CRSA board members and the many volunteers who come out to help and enjoy the weekend.
A Gathering of Generations:
Boian Days brings together Romanians from across Alberta and beyond, to celebration of Romanian Traditions, culture and community. The museum offers a beautiful space for reunion, reflection, and joy.
Boian Days is a celebration of memory and hope—an expression of Romanian identity, of faith that endures all trials, and of the unity of a community that continues to rise, rebuild, and thrive.
